Chunky Crochet Flowers for Spring | Easy Quick Spring Craft Idea | Super Soft Merino Wool

Create a chunky crochet flowers decoration to make your own hair bobble children’s flower. How to create your own flower decoration using crochet to add to a hair accessory or hat or scarf.

It has almost been 2 months since I embarked on my crocheting journey, having never tried to crochet before and I mean, starting from the beginning. I knew nothing about how to crochet at all.

I’ve started out crocheting simple squares, graduating to an Easter basket with handles (see a previous blog post). My latest learning experiment has been creating these super cute crochet flower decorations. I’ve enjoyed this project so much; the chunky Merino Yarn from Woolly Mahoosive, is a great starting yarn for those learning to crochet; I’ve found it so much easier than a smaller yarn because I can clearly see the stitches, it is much less fiddly and I can start and finish a project in an evening quickly. Love this yarn. Plus, the feel is so soft and the colours are beautiful; soft pastel shades and brighter pops of colour, each shade seems to work really well with the next.

I thought I’d share my floral creations step by step so you can see how to do it yourself!

These crochet flower decorations would be gorgeous to use as appliqué embellishments to hats, scarves and other accessories that just need a little something special. I also tied one onto a bobble which made for a really hippy boho style children’s hair accessory. How about a crochet flower hair band, crocheted daisy brooch or floral garland using crochet? The possibilities are endless, and like me, you’ll “be hooked”!

CREATING A CENTRE OF FLOWER USING MAGIC CIRCLE CROCHET and chunky merino12mm HOOK

I hadn’t tried to make a magic circle before, a technique that is well worth learning as a beginner as many crochet patterns use a magic circle. Some of our Woolly Mahoosive DIY crochet and knitting kits and Wall Decor instructions do contain magic circle as part of the creation of the project, so definitely an essential crocheting must. However, it is worth mentioning that we do craft kits to create home wall decorations that require NO knitting or crochet at all, so there really is something for everyone.

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE A MAGIC CIRCLE:

  • PLACE THE END OF YARN OVER YOUR FINGERS AND HOLD WITH THUMB

  • WRAP THE WORKING END AROUND AND HOLD

  • THERE IS NOW AN X CROSS SHAPE OF YARN ON THE FRONT OF YOUR HAND AND 2 LINES ON THE BACK

  • ON BACK OF HAND: PLACE HOOK UNDER FIRST THREAD AND PULL THROUGH THE SECOND

  • TWIST HOOK AND GRAB SAME YARN AGAIN WITH HOOK, BRING THROUGH

  • GENTLY PULL FINGERS OUT OF THE CIRCLE

  • WORK INTO CENTRE OF CIRCLE

  • TO MAKE SMALL CIRCLE: CH2, 6DC

  • TO MAKE LARGER CIRCLE: CH3, 6TR

  • PULL END OF YARN TO TIGHTEN AND CLOSE THE CIRCLE

  • SLST IN 1ST STITCH TO JOIN

  • SNIP YARN AND PULL THROUGH END TO FINISH

I love this technique of making a crochet leaf with the chunky merino yarn. You can experiment with the leaf size by chaining more in the beginning and play around with the leaf shape by altering the sequence within the pattern.

You could also create different sizes of flowers and darn or weave them together to secure the layers and then stitch onto your chosen garment, hat, scarf, gloves or hair accessory.

Enjoy!
